Freiburg with Good Friends and Hello from Dijon

Apparently I'm angry...

Ryan and Angela arrived in Freiburg beginning of July and the first few days stayed downtown because they had booked an apartment to attend a beer or food festival that got cancelled. I didn’t see the apartment but the location was perfect, just behind the Stadt Theatre. They moved to Rieselfeld apartment within the week and are staying where they have stayed three times before. Germany has for June, July, August a monthly tram ticket costing only 9 Euro per month (usually around 50 per month) which is great.

We’ve been downtown many days and even attended a wine festival. For that event we thought about it carefully to avoid crowds, went for the start time and when more people started coming in we left. We concentrated on Rose wines and had some great ones.

We took the S-Bahn train to Titisee, walked around it then lunched at the Bergsee restaurant who serves trout and it was good, as it is there. Then went to a small cafe for hikers on the lake but away from the touristy area and had a drink before training home. It was nice to be by the water!

Ryan and Angela were at a beer garden and discovered this gin (gin in a beer garden? I didn't question, just enjoyed) which changes colour when you add soda to it. So pretty!

We’ve been breakfasting together between two cafes in Rieselfeld, one is mostly bread products, the other does eggs and is slightly more fancy with it’s garden patio.

Liz and Monica came into town for one day and we got together for late afternoon snacks and the next morning breakfast. They are travelling in a motorhome and have gone in a circular route through Germany enjoying the greenery and quiet. I can imagine Liz got great inspiration for her painting and it was so good to see her again.

Both Angela and Ran got their hair died rather colourfully by Sophie my hairdresser. I recommended them to her because she dies her hair a multitude of colours. Sophie was delighted with the project and Ryan and Angela were also with the results.

Christoph is available for the next week so we went to Landerer Winery that I’ve been to so many times. We met Suzanne who is the girlfriend of Johanes the wine maker and they are expecting a child in three weeks. She has been in the business for years and was very friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. For lunch we went to the restaurant on the river Rhine and enjoyed watching the barges and smaller boats float by.

Ryan's joke, this is our wine delivery!

Sunday we went to Chada Thai and you know how I love that place - yum!

Another day we went to Emmendingen and ate Emotion restaurant. This small town has snails for mascots, I remember being told they were a problem for farmers in neighbouring fields.

We met up with Frank, owner of the Lotto, tobacco and paper goods shop at Ciao Bella for lunch. He is doing well and will travel to Dresden soon, going in stages from Freiburg making a round trip.

We went to Selestat in France and wanted to go to a Tunisian restaurant we’d been to before but they were closed for vacation so we ate at Chatenois typical German food. Then we drove up and up the mountain to Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg, which is one very large castle! The views were naturally spectacular but the gnats got to everyone and we didn’t stay long. We really lucked out for parking, very close to the entrance otherwise it would have been a long walk to and fro up and down the mountain.

Our last day together before we travel to different destinations we wanted a special lunch and where else to go but Chada Thai, closed, none of us had checked. Ryan found us a fancy German restaurant on top of a hill, Christoph had never been to called Chez Eric, in the Hotel Panorama. The view was fantastic, restaurant had great food and very attentive wait staff, read expensive but a special lunch indeed.

A couple of pictures and a sunset video from the apartment in Freiburg while we were hanging out together.

Christoph drove me to Dijon, it takes about 2 hours 30 minutes and the only “problem” with his car is it isn’t air-conditioned. We made it, stickily but easily, Lexi travelled well, I’m glad the heat doesn’t seem to affect her.

Before you ask, yes, it is hotter here than normal, both Freiburg and Dijon. When I first arrived in Freiburg it was 10 degrees hotter than Sevilla! All to be said on that front, except I’m wearing shorts mostly which is unusual for me.

Thank you to Ryan and Angela for most of the pictures!

Cheers, Bev and Lexi Cat
